The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

Each time a major honors show nears, one notices an outcry for introducing additional classifications to acknowledge overlooked contributions and delight the hearts of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

Another commentator has already made for a horror game category. That would rule. The same goes for strategy board titles, which is someone's personal cause. However, I must insist for pushing forward since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification for why my demand remains most pressing and significant. This is the request: There should be a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and it will always generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. But it is an essential concession for the industry of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they hardly constitute one unified medium.

To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these six categories effectively encompass a lot of ground, allowing placement for most games within them.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Think about these this year’s best games, all very different: building puzzles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Which classification works between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.

The Representation Problem

Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games released every year that have no home during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked in any category during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release missed out that year
  • Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Only a few logic titles scraped into independent or mobile categories

Value of Brain-Teasers

Commonly they're small games, yet the craft of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Well-known matching games count as the most-played games in the world continuing this trend for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience challenges popular creative games competing to become most purchased experience; it also contends for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. One could readily select five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these represent titles that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers are working at the challenging frontier game development, developing some of essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Similar to film action specialists, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay generations.
